By Dr. Godfrey Pondei.
According to Mahatma Gandhi, a preeminent leader of Indian nationalism in British-ruledIndia who employed non-violent civil disobedience in leading India to independence, “whatwe are doing to the forests and waterways of the world is but a mirror reflection of what we are doing to ourselves and to one another.” This is akin the clarion call by rural dwellers of Southern Ijaw Local Government to find ways of checking further pollution of the ecosystem resulting from activities of illegal bunkering, pipeline vandalism and refining of petroleum products. ROAD MAP TO INFRASTRUCTURAL DEVELOPMENT IN SILGA

20131216-071112.jpg

A WELCOME ADDRESS PRESENTED BY THE EXECUTIVE CHAIRMAN OF SOUTHERN IJAW LOCAL GOVERNMENT COUNCIL, CHIEF (HON) REMEMBER P.N. OGBE TO THE EXECUTIVE GOVERNOR OF BAYELSA STATE HIS EXCELLENCY, HON HENRY SERIAKE DICKSON ON THE OCCASION OF HIS THANK YOU VISIT TO OPOROMA, THE HEADQUARTERS OF SOUTHERN IJAW LOCAL GOVERNMENT AREA ON MONDAY THE 9TH OF DECEMBER, 2013

PROTOCOL

I feel very humble and delighted to stand here to welcome you to Oporoma, the heart of the good people of Southern Ijaw Local Government Area.

This visit is very significant to the people of Southern Ijaw and could be likened to the ‘’Triumphant entry of our lord Jesus Christ to Jerusalem’’ wherein the children of Israel shouted Hosanna in the highest, the son of David. In the same vein the people of Southern Ijaw are chanting hosanna in the highest the son of Chief Melford Okilo of blessed memory.

Your Excellency Sir, it may perhaps interest you to note that the average Southern Ijaw person regards you as their political messiah and the reason for this is not far-fetched. Southern Ijaw being the largest Local government in the country is blessed with abundant human and natural resource that has not been properly harnessed due to absence of a road linking her to Yenagoa the state capital or any other urban city.

This state of affairs no double accounted for the gross underdevelopment of the area until now when you have decided to provide the much needed development to the area by embarking on the construction of the Yenagoa –Oporoma –Ukubie Road.

Your Excellency Sir, you have within such a short period in office completed the reconstruction of the Tombia – Amassoma road, and the approaching Anyama-Ijaw. We the people of Silga in the true characteristic of Ijaw people say Noah! Doo!! Noah ooh!!!

Another major reason why the people of Southern Ijaw are celebrating you today is the prevailing peace security you provided for us. It is worthy of note that on your assumption office, you promised Bayelsans security of lives and property and peaceful environment which is sin-qua-non to development. We are happy to inform you that there is peace in Silga as people go about their lawful businesses in our creeks and rivers.

In addition, we are aware that your administration has embarked upon various development projects in various communities in our L.G.A, yet the road construction you have started, the rehabilitation of the Tombia – Amassoma road prevailing peace in the area stood out for our people.

We therefore implore you to complete the road you have started and maintain the peaceful atmosphere pervading in the L.G.A.

Furthermore, it is worthy of mention that on the 6th of April, 2013 you charged the chairman of the various local government councils to key into your restoration agenda of infrastructural development, security, transparency and accountability. In line with this policy frame work and as your agent of development at the grassroot level, my council has embarked upon various developmental projects which include the construction of road network from (1) Oporoma – Otuan – Amassoma, (2) Oporoma – Ekowe – Peremabiri, (3) Oporoma – Umbugbene and (4) Ekowe – Olugbobiri.

The completed of these road projects will open up the hinterland of the L.G.A and since these projects are capital intensive, we most respectfully urge you to collaborate with the Southern Ijaw Local Government council for the completion of these projects.

In addition to these road projects, the council has embarked upon other project as follows:

1. The construction of ultra modern market Amassoma.

2. The renovation of secretariat complex, Oporoma.

3. Renovation of restoration play ground, Oporoma

4. Construction of Marine police office, Oporoma

5. Construction of modern police station, Amassoma.

6. Construction of police staff quarters, Amassoma.

7. Construction of 24 flats storey building for council staff, Oporoma

8. JTF Station Azuzuama

9. JTF Station Koluama

10. JTF Station Iginagbene

11. JTF Station Olugbobiri

12. Primary Health centre, Amassoma

13. Staff Quarters, PHC, Amassoma

14. Construction of a modern cafe, Oporoma

15. Provision of mini-water works, Oporoma

16. Construction of concrete walkway at Oporoma.

17. Construction of walkway at Amassoma

18. Provision of official vehicles for principle staff of council and councillors

It is heartwarming to note that some of these projects have been completed while others are in advance stage. We shall carve your indulgence to commission them in no distant time.

Finally, we are not unaware of the fact that the plethora of projects you have executed all over the State within a short period in office has endeared you to the entire Bayelsa State, yet we the people of Southern Ijaw consider ourselves as the luckiest to have you as our Governor because of the road projects and therefore, we have no regret in giving you total support for both your primary election in 2011 and general election in 2012 respectively.

We the people of Southern Ijaw categorically state that considering your catalogue of achievements, we are solidly behind you in your quest to transform the state.

We wish you and your entourage journey mercies as you depart Oporoma for Yenagoa in continuation of your thank you tour.

Long live Governor Henry Sriake Dickson

Long live Bayelsa State.

Long live Southern Ijaw.

GOV DICKSON THANK YOU TOUR: DAY FOUR, KALEIDOSCOPE OF BRILLIANT COLOR IN SOUTHERN IJAW LGA

20131211-211757.jpg
Governor Dickson and his entourage embarked on day four of his visit to LGA`s in Bayelsa state and this time it was the turn of Southern Ijaw LGA. In what now looks like routine, thanks in no small measure to a well planned event, a huge crowd numbering close to three thousand people was on hand to welcome the visitors.

Travelling from Yenagoa to Southern Ijaw, the river banks are different from what we saw with for instance, enroute Brass or Nembe LGA`s. The entire journey showed off not mangrove swamps with stilted plants and trees, but forests on dry land.

It was quite revealing to see that Bayelsa has so much variety in terms of forests and land. The river had a dusty hue and there were quite a few locals fishing or ferrying sand along the route that took us about forty five minutes to cover. Continue reading
